Re-cycle initiative gives old bikes new life

News Update 1 August 2022
Recycling

The City continues to partner with non-profit organisation Bicycles for Humanity to donate unwanted bikes to remote communities.

Bikes that would have otherwise been recycled as scrap metal at the City’s Recycling Centre are salvaged by organisations such as the Men’s Shed and donated to communities in rural Western Australia and Africa.

Participation is simple. You can donate your unwanted bike to the Recycling Centre where it will undergo a quality check. From there, it will be passed on to Bikes for Humanity for repair before being donated to people in need.

Sturdy, adult-size and BMX-size bikes are accepted. Children’s bikes are generally not accepted, as it is harder to find homes for the little ones.

Head to our Recycling Programs page for more information.
