Are you ready for the Garage Sale Trail?
Dozens of local residents and community groups have signed up to take part in this year’s Garage Sale Trail.
The Garage Sale Trail is part of a national sustainability event to help reduce landfill by creating awareness and encouraging the community to reuse and reduce waste.
Households, schools, community groups and local businesses will join over 400,000 people across the country on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November as part of the tenth annual Garage Sale Trail.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic things are being done a little differently, for the first time there will be virtual garage sales as well as real world garage sales.
City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said if you haven’t already registered for the Garage Sale Trail, I encourage you to get involved. It’s a great opportunity to connect with your local community, declutter your homes and make some extra money.
“The City is thrilled to be involved with this initiative once again and looks forward to a successful community event,” Mayor Milner said.
Hensman Street Elementary School is one local community organisation that has registered and will be holding an event on Saturday 21 November between 9am-1pm.
Principal Tanya Steers said they have been teaching the children about waste and recycling and believe this is a great opportunity to demonstrate what you can do with things you no longer need. It is also a perfect time for the community to come and visit our school and see the children’s hard work.
“Staff and children have been busy making bread bags, growing succulents and collecting worm wee for the garden. School families have also been invited to set up a table of pre-loved goodies to sell on the day.
“All funds raised will go towards a new compost system, rainwater collection tanks and ongoing maintenance of our new sustainability hub,” Ms Steers said.
The FREE Garage Sale Trail program is supported by over 115 councils across Australia. Event organisers are estimating that more than 2 million items will be listed for sale and diverted from landfill around the country this year.
