City supports The Big Issue

Media Release 15 October 2020

This week is Anti-Poverty Week and the City and Mayor Greg Milner are proud to support this important initiative through the annual Mayor Selling event.

This national event involves Mayors around the country taking to the streets to sell The Big Issue magazine.

The Big Issue is best known for providing low-barrier work opportunities to people who are doing it tough for all kinds of reasons. The concept is simple, street vendors buy the magazine for $4.50 and sell it on the streets around the country for $9.

Local governments play an important role in helping establish locations for vendors to sell the magazine, as well as ensuring vendors become part of the community. Since The Big Issue magazine launched in 1996, vendors experiencing homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage have earned an incredible $31 million.

City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said it was a great pleasure to be involved with this very important initiative.

“I was honoured to be working with Big Issue vendor Mick, who has been selling the magazine for five years.

“I encourage our local community to stop and chat to the vendors who regularly sell The Big Issue magazine around the City, they are an important part of our community,” Mayor Milner said.
