Free battery recycling boxes

News Update 26 April 2018

An initiative of the City of South Perth has created handy new recycling boxes for batteries, making it even easier for you to safely store your used batteries before recycling them.

The free cardboard boxes are available to collect from the City’s Recycling Centre, Civic Centre as well as Manning and South Perth Libraries.

It's easy! Simply put your old household batteries (dry-cell) in the box and store them safely until you are ready to dispose of them at one of the drop-off points; City of South Perth Recycling Centre, Civic Centre, South Perth Library and Manning Library and local schools that support the School Battery Recycling program. Remember to hold on to the box and use it again.

“This is a great and innovative initiative to encourage recycling within the City of South Perth,” Mayor Sue Doherty said.

“The recovery and recycling of batteries assists in reducing pollution from landfill sites. As batteries start to break down in landfill, particularly in an acidic environment, heavy metals can leach into surface and groundwater. Additionally, recycling of batteries assists in conserving valuable non-renewable resources such as nickel and lead-zinc-silver ores.

“The City provides a range of recycling programs and services for our community. As well as fortnightly recycling and verge side collections, residents and property owners can dispose of additional waste and recycling at the Recycling Centre located at 199 Thelma Street in Como. Items including include E-Waste, cardboard and other paper, scrap metal, light globes are accepted if they are separated from general waste loads.”

Types of batteries accepted include:

  • AA and AAA cells (single use and rechargeable)
  • C and D size batteries
  • Button batteries (used in watches and toys)
  • 9V batteries
  • 6V batteries (used in torches and lanterns)

Drop-off points:
