‘Slow down’ luncheon to celebrate carers

Media Release 19 September 2017

Local carers are invited to connect and unwind over a delicious high-tea style lunch at Lifestreams Church in Como on Saturday 21 October, 11am-1pm.

The City of South Perth’s free ‘Slow Down’ luncheon is open to anyone who is an informal carer of a loved one of any age.

The event, which coincides with National Carers Week 15-21 October, is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution unpaid carers make in our community.

Generously supported by Lotterywest and Carers WA, the event includes tips on reducing stress, mindfulness activities, a conversation about the importance of social supports, good food and a good dose of humour to help relax and revive the informal carers in the City’s local community.

Anyone at any time can become a carer, sometimes it can come upon people in unexpected ways. So many provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

“Family carers play an integral part and important role in our community, by providing vital support to those in need.  It may be short term care or sometimes the care giving is on-going during the life of the person being cared for,” City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said.

“We are opening our arms to welcome all carers to this very special ‘slow down’ luncheon including those who might not define themselves as a 'carer' despite having that informal role. This event will offer carers the chance to form new networks of support or simply listen to other carers experiences and their journeys, providing opportunities for learning and understanding.”

Educating and raising awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their care giving roles is what National Carers Week is all about.

The contribution carers make to our communities is enormous.  It is estimated that carers roles are valued at $60.3 billion annually – more than $1 billion per week. National Carers Week 2017 provides the community with a chance to learn about carers and caring in Australia.

To attend the free Carers ‘slow down’ luncheon visit the City’s website and RSVP by Friday 13 October 2017.
