Residents will get to have their say on Reform
The Minister for Local Government and Communities has sent us formal notice telling us that a referendum (poll) will be held on the proposal to amalgamate the City of South Perth with the Town of Victoria Park.
We, as your elected members, have fought hard for your rights and interests so you can have a say on the future of our community. It is now up to you to exercise your democratic right and cast your vote in the referendum. I urge you to do so.
You can choose whether to vote YES or NO to the amalgamation.
Those residents in the City of Canning suburbs of Wilson and Bentley have been refused the opportunity to vote.
Making a decision to say YES or NO means weighing up the pros and cons. Our Council has tried to help residents and ratepayers in making this decision through providing additional information on the advantages and disadvantages. This information also is to be distributed to all households via post from 12 January 2015.
About the referendum (poll)
The Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) will conduct the referendum via a postal vote, with eligible electors receiving their voting information via post from Wednesday 14 January 2015.
When you receive the envelope, from the WAEC it will contain the referendum question and you will be asked to vote YES or NO to the referendum question:
Should the City of South Perth and the Town of Victoria Park be abolished and amalgamated to form a new local government?
Voting closes at 6pm on Saturday 7 February 2015.
Just like an ordinary election, the City’s Civic Centre will be open as the polling place from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 7 February 2015. So if you didn’t manage to make a postal vote there is the opportunity to come into the City’s Civic Centre and hand deliver your ballot paper.
As soon as the poll is closed, voting will commence, and like any election, members of the public are most welcome to come along and observe the count. The results of the poll will be known that evening, and for those who can’t come along to the count, the information will be available on the WAEC’s website that night.
Who is eligible to vote?
You may be eligible to be enrolled to vote at the poll if you live in or are an owner or occupier of rateable property in the City of South Perth.
A person is eligible to be an elector if they:
Are aged 18 years and over
Are Australian citizens
Have lived at their current address for at least one month

How the poll works

Whilst the City of South Perth are holding a poll, one is also being held in the Town of Victoria Park. The outcome of the Victoria Park poll will impact on the City, as will the outcome our poll also impact on theirs.
If either poll receives more than the required 50% of electors voting, and the majority vote against the recommendation for an amalgamation, the Minister is required to reject it and the amalgamation cannot be implemented for either Council.
