Ernest Johnson Master Plan
Journalist’s Background: The City is conducting a master planning study into the potential redevelopment of Ernest Johnson Reserve.
Please attribute the following comments to City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty:
What is the City's vision for Ernest Johnson Reserve?
Ernest Johnson Reserve provides recreational, sporting and social opportunities for residents within the City of South Perth. As part of its Strategic and Corporate plan, the City has appointed Jill Powell and Associates to undertake Stage One of a Master Planning study into the potential redevelopment of the Ernest Johnson Reserve and its associated buildings.
The master plan will aim to accommodate the needs of relevant sport clubs, community groups, the local community and the City and to produce a contemporary, functional, multipurpose and sustainable facility.
The final plans and resulting outcome for Ernest Johnson Reserve will be dependent on the outcomes of the master plan, stakeholder/community feedback and placed before Council for consideration.
How long has the City been engaged in this study?
The study commenced in October 2011 and is anticipated to conclude around April/May of 2012.
How would the City describe the current state of the reserve?
The reserve and its buildings are adequate for their current purposes. All facilities receive regular maintenance and upkeep to ensure they continue to provide a suitable level of service for the community groups and stakeholders.
Could the reserve be transformed into a major sporting complex?
Community input will assist in determining whether a new facility is built or the existing facility can be modified to meet the perceived demand. The City classifies EJ Reserve as a district sporting reserve, as it provides facilities for the immediate surrounding residents and to a wide range of community groups and clubs.
Where does this go from here? When will a report go to council?
Members of the community will have the opportunity to share their views on the redevelopment at a public focus group.
The public focus group is to be held at 6.30pm on Thursday 8 March 2012 at Ernest Johnson Pavilion, Ernest Johnson Oval, South Tce, South Perth.
The consultant is currently meeting with sporting clubs and other stakeholders who currently use EJ Reserve.
It is likely that a report will be submitted to Council towards the end of the financial year.
Also, are there any images of what the ground may look like?
As the Ernest Johnson Master Plan is in very early days there are no images available.
