Volunteers shine at 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards
The City of South Perth has recognised the outstanding contributions of its community members at its 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards, held yesterday at Sir James Mitchell Park.
The Community Citizen of the Year award was presented to Troy Dixon for over 40 years of service to the South Perth Lions Rugby League Club. Beginning as a ball-boy and growing into a long-serving Junior Club committee member, Troy has shaped generations of young players, making community sport safe, accessible and family-focused.
Alessia Maio from South Perth was named Young Community Citizen of the Year for her remarkable dedication to improving the lives of children, young people and families across Western Australia. Through her service at Perth Children’s Hospital, Diabetes WA camps, and as Co-Chair of the Ministerial Youth Advisory Council, Alessia has ensured the voices of young people are heard at the highest levels.
Roger Reynolds from Manning received the Senior Community Citizen of the Year award for his tireless work protecting and enhancing the City’s natural areas. Through hand-weeding, planting, watering and sharing his knowledge of native species, Roger has nurtured healthy bushland and vibrant public spaces.
The Active Citizenship Award went to the Lions Club of South Perth for its long-standing Carols at Sunset event. For around 40 years, the club has brought the community together each December, delivering a joyful, inclusive celebration for thousands of residents while raising funds for local projects.
Mayor Greg Milner congratulated all winners and nominees for their commitment to making a difference in the community.
"The dedication, passion and hard work of these volunteers make our community stronger, more connected and more vibrant," Mayor Milner said.
"Their selfless efforts inspire us all and show the incredible impact volunteering has across the City."
The Community Citizen of the Year Awards are presented in partnership with AUSPIRE, the Australia Day Council of Western Australia.
These awards took place during the City’s annual Australia Day Morning Ceremony, where over 100 people from 40 countries took the pledge to become an Australian Citizen.
