Community shines at National Tree Planting Day
On Sunday 28 July, the community came together to plant over 15,000 seedlings at Elderfield Wetlands for National Tree Day.
Despite the threat of rain, the event saw its highest turnout, thanks to the dedication of families and community members who showed up in their gumboots and raincoats to participate.
The event marked Planet Ark's National Tree Day, an annual initiative aimed at educating and connecting communities with nature.
This year’s efforts focused on planting sedges and rushes to improve water quality and restore the environmental value of the vital wetland, home to at least 74 bird species.
More than 250 locals attended, and by midday volunteers had already achieved the ambitious goal of planting 12,500 seedlings.
The enthusiasm didn’t stop there, as staff had to bring more seedlings while the community continued planting, eventually reaching an impressive total of approximately 15,500 seedlings—2,000 more than last year.
Feedback from staff highlighted the overwhelmingly positive atmosphere of the event, underscoring its success as the largest community planting day to date for the City of South Perth.
The City would also like to thank event sponsor New Town Toyota, for providing the community hats and gloves for the day.
