Seniors creating community
Jessie has been a member for nine years and says she joined the centre after she gave up playing regular tennis and golf. She’s now found her new passion, table tennis.
She says the company of other people her age, mental stimulation, and exercise are what she loves most.
“I’ve enjoyed it always,” Jessie says. “The people are lovely, very friendly – and good sports. We have lots of fun and there’s some keen competition but not serious.”
“This is a lovely place to come to. There are lots of activities, something for everyone, really, and it’s a very well-run centre.”
Both the Manning and South Perth Senior Citizens Centres provide a wide range of social, recreational, and cultural activities, promoting health and wellbeing for people aged 55 years and over.
Regular keep-fit classes, chess, bridge, bingo, yoga, indoor bowls, mah-jong, tai chi, dancing, and free iPad classes are some of the activities offered at the centres.
Services include hairdressing, podiatry, remedial massage, and shopping centre excursions.
Denise has lived in Como for the best part of 30 years and says she visits the Manning centre to simply catch up with friends, have a chat, and a meal.
“We have a wonderful chef here, and it’s a great opportunity on a Wednesday or Friday to come along and enjoy the friendship of other members, the friendship of the club, and enjoy a lovely three-course meal,” she says.
“It’s a wonderful club, wonderfully run. You have a superb supervisor here, Glenn. And there’s the choir, the whole ambiance of the club that you can come along and enjoy. Just come and try.”
