Kensington underground power project over 25% complete
The Kensington underground power project is making strong progress, with works now more than 25% complete.
The project, which began in November 2025, is expected to be completed by mid-late 2027 and will connect more than 2,000 properties across South Perth, Kensington and Waterford to underground power.
Following the completion of the South Perth Hurlingham underground power project in August 2025 and the Manning project in 2022, the Kensington project will help transition the last remaining residential pockets of the City to underground power, creating a more resilient network and safer, greener streets for the community.
In the Kensington project area to date, 29 of 53 kilometres of underground cable have been installed, along with 506 customer connections, 37 of 552 new LED streetlights have been erected and key primary equipment works are underway.
Works progressing across the project area
Work is continuing across the project’s eight zones. In Zone 1, underground services have been identified and marked, locating drilling is complete and testing is underway. Locating in Zone 2 is 88% complete, while in Zone 6, locating is 79% complete, drilling is 82% complete and customer main installations are 77% complete. Work is also underway in Zone 3 and along Vista Street.
Western Power is partnering with the City to deliver the project, which will strengthen the power network, improve public safety and support a cleaner energy future. By moving distribution powerlines underground, the risk of outages during severe weather is reduced, while allowing for larger trees and greener streets.
Residents are asked to take care around work sites, follow all signage and remain alert for crews working in their area. Affected households will receive a letter ahead of each stage of works.
