Shifting sands pave way for new playground at George Burnett Park

Residents and park users may notice sand and soil being delivered and stockpiled at George Burnett Park in Karawara from Thursday 27 August.  

The natural material, known as clean fill, is being reused from the Coode Street foreshore riverbank restoration project to help construct a new playground planned for the George Burnett Park this financial year.  

Reusing suitable soil and natural material across City projects is a sustainable and cost-effective approach that reduces waste and the need to source and transport new material. Similar clean fill has previously been reused in other City projects, including the Manning Bike Track. 

The clean fill will be stockpiled near the proposed playground location (see map below). Trucks are expected to travel through the park over the next one to two weeks. Park users are encouraged to take care around work vehicles and follow any temporary traffic controls in place. 

The new playground is part of the City’s 2026/27 Capital Works Program and will replace the park’s two existing playgrounds with one larger play space near the bike track and skate park. Community consultation on the playground design will take place closer to construction, with more information to be shared soon.
