Foreshore irrigation upgrade flows into final stage
The final stage of the multi-year Sir James Mitchell Park irrigation upgrade is now underway, extending the improved system from near Lake Hurlingham to Ellam Street at the eastern end of the park.

The upgrade, expected to be completed in late 2026, replaces ageing irrigation infrastructure in the City’s iconic park and will help maintain healthy, green foreshore spaces for residents and visitors.
Stage 1of the project was completed in 2024 and included works near Lake Tondut and Clydesdale Reserve on Douglas Avenue, as well as upgrades from the west side of the Narrows Bridge to the South Perth Esplanade car park. Stage 2, between Coode Street and the South Perth Esplanade car park, was completed early this year.
The new irrigation system improves water efficiency, enables hydro-zoning for more targeted irrigation, reduces downtime from system failures, and provides better coverage across turf, garden beds and establishing natural areas such as the Hurlingham Living Stream.
Once complete, the project will help the City manage longer, hotter seasons, improve water use efficiency and ensure the foreshore remains well maintained for events and visitors throughout summer.
It is one of several City initiatives enhancing the foreshore’s natural environment and improving this popular community space.
