Local groups awarded funding for urban greening projects
From bee hotels to cockitroughs, five local environmental and community groups have received a funding boost to support local conservation efforts in the City of South Perth.
Just under $60,000 has been allocated to projects that will support revegetation, biodiversity, conservation education and bushland improvements across the City.
The funding was provided by the WA Government as part of the 2025 Local Government Election Commitments and administered by the City of South Perth.
Successful projects were:
- JMH Action Group - for revegetation, planting and maintenance of bushland at Como High School (Department of Education) and adjacent City-managed land, including weed removal and fencing repairs
- Friends of Manning Bushland - for the replacement of a limestone path within Manning Bushland
- Friends of Davilak Crescent Bushland - for the installation of a bee hotel, bug hotel, log seating and interpretive materials
- Friends of David Street Reserve - for the installation of a wildlife water trough (‘cockitrough’) at David Street Reserve
- Wildlife Advocacy South Perth - for the installation of a community awareness sign at Sir James Mitchell Park.
Mayor Greg Milner congratulated the successful grant recipients and the volunteers who worked tirelessly to advocate for local conservation.
“Together, these projects will enhance local biodiversity, improve access and infrastructure in bushland areas, support community education and engagement in conservation, increase climate resilience and enhance the liveability of our local neighbourhoods,” Mayor Milner said.
“The projects also support the City’s Urban Greening Strategy, which provides long-term direction for creating a healthy, resilient and diverse urban environment through tree canopy expansion, revegetation and habitat restoration initiatives.”
Member for South Perth Geoff Baker MLA acknowledged the contribution of volunteers to local conservation efforts.
“These grants recognise the immense work that volunteers do looking after the natural environment in South Perth,” he said.
The projects are expected to be delivered by the end of 2026 with support from the City of South Perth.
