New accessibility training and sensory programs rolled out in the City
Did you know one in six of us live with a disability?
The City of South Perth is rolling out new initiatives this April to improve accessibility and inclusion for people with disability, with a strong focus on supporting residents with diverse sensory and communication needs, as well as their families.
City teams are undertaking accessibility training through the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. Newly trained staff will wear ‘ally’ lanyards, signalling they have completed disability-specific training and are ready to provide inclusive support.
We’re also introducing inclusive Lego sessions at our libraries, offering calm, supportive sessions for neurodiverse children to connect and play. In addition, residents can attend NDIS information sessions this April, delivered by Wanslea and APM Communities, to learn more about available funding and services.
Chill-out zone kits, featuring sensory-friendly equipment, will also be introduced at City events from late April.
These initiatives coincide with World Autism Month in April, with the City also participating in Light up the Spectrum on 4 April by illuminating Mindeerup and the Old Mill to celebrate diversity in our community.
