Lake Tondut and Lake Hurlingham on the South Perth foreshore will benefit from improved water quality and an enhanced wildlife habitat following the recent installation of new aerators.

With water quality declining in the warmer months due to high temperatures and low rainfall, the aerators have been installed to create healthier, more resilient lakes. They improve circulation, boost oxygen levels and help prevent algae, stagnation, bacterial growth and unpleasant odours. The aerators also enhance the lakes’ appearance, resembling fountains and making the water appear clearer.

The project is one of many City initiatives to enhance the foreshore and forms part of the South Perth Foreshore Strategy and Management Plan, which guides future improvements informed by extensive community consultation.

As part of the Plan, the Lakes Node (Lake Douglas, Lake Hurlingham and Lake Tondut) is being improved to better support birdlife and other fauna, learning and passive recreation, while connecting the lakes more closely with the surrounding area. The lakes are popular with walkers, joggers, dog owners, residents and visitors, and receive urban stormwater. Lake Tondut also provides irrigation for Sir James Mitchell Park and Clydesdale Reserve.

The aerators, which run from 3-9am and 3-9pm every day, will enhance water quality, support urban biodiversity and provide a more attractive natural environment for the community.
