The May Gibbs Art Story Posts have officially opened at Windsor Park in South Perth, with this magical attraction set to delight families and literary lovers alike.
Created by an amazing pool of talent from Manning Men’s Shed and inspired by the beloved tales of iconic Australian author and illustrator May Gibbs, the enchanting Art Story Posts invite children and their families to explore the wonders of the bush through interactive art and storytelling.
The Artwork features three imaginative sculptures that bring Gibbs’ classic characters from her renowned children’s books to life in a fun, hands-on way, linking local flora to her whimsical world.
Interpretive installations include a Gumnut Babies Village, a Gumnut Totem Pole and a Banksia Pod which include interactive elements and illustrations inspired from her timeless stories.
Children can explore characters and tales that have captivated generations of Australians, all while enjoying the outdoors and fostering a love of nature.
Commissioned by the City of South Perth, this charming artwork was brought to life by talented members of the Manning Men’s Shed under the artisanship of Kim Horne, through design, carpentry, metalwork, scenic painting, 3D printing and CNC carving.
A group of talented women from the Shed also stepped in to create the dioramas featured inside the Banksia Pod and Gumnut Babies Village, and to produce the artwork on the gumnut totem pole.
Their designs were inspired by May Gibbs’ original illustrations, brought to life through detailed pyrography, a mosaic panel, a resin-sculpted beach scene and hand-painted elements.
This collaborative effort gave the members of the Manning Men’s Shed a chance to share their skills, learn new techniques, and celebrate their creativity. The result is a vibrant, richly detailed tribute to May Gibbs that blends storytelling, craftsmanship and community pride.
