Purple Road blooms at South Perth Library
To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on 15 June, a piece of the Purple Road will be on display at South Perth Library from 9 June.
The visually striking artwork was created by local community group Knitter Natter and Helping Hands from Southcare, under the guidance of the City’s community development officer.
The display is part of a larger installation made up of hundreds of hand-knitted and crocheted purple flowers contributed by people across Western Australia. Together, these flowers form a symbolic Purple Road stretching more than 100m in length.
Each intricately crafted flower represents a story, conversation or reflection about ageing, dignity and respect.
The Purple Road initiative, led by the Older People’s Rights Service, raises awareness of elder abuse – a serious human rights issue that can impact older people in many forms.
WEAAD is observed globally and encourages communities to come together in solidarity to advocate for the safety and well-being of our older population.
