Have your say on the draft Urban Greening Strategy

Media Release 7 May 2025
The City of South Perth Urban Greening Strategy is entering its final stage of stakeholder and community engagement.

Led by independent consultants Aha! Consulting and Josh Byrne and Associates and developed through comprehensive engagement with the community, the draft Urban Greening Strategy sets out to deliver key outcomes and benefits for both the community and environment, including cooling the city, enhancing biodiversity and improving public health.

The Strategy builds on two stages of extensive stakeholder and community engagement, which involved ideas shared through community activities, an online survey and a two-day Deliberative Panel attended by 38 community representatives in February.

It provides clear guidance to support a more climate resilient and liveable City through initiatives such as green corridors, urban parks and foreshores, community education, incentive programs, policy development, advocacy and funding.

Importantly, the Strategy recognises that urban greening is not just about the urban forest or tree canopy. It also incorporates vegetation, shrubs, understorey planting and many other ways to identify and retain nature and biodiversity.

City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said it had been encouraging to see such strong community interest in shaping the future of urban greening in the City.

“We’ve heard from a wide range of voices throughout the development of the draft Urban Greening Strategy,” he said.

“This final stage of engagement is a vital opportunity for our community to review the draft and have their say before it is presented to Council for consideration.

“Strategies like this are strongest when built from the ground up and I am really pleased it has been guided by a range of community perspectives.”

Following the feedback period, submissions will be reviewed and the draft updated accordingly. The final Strategy will be presented to Council for consideration later this year.

Feedback closes at 4pm, Tuesday 27 May 2025.
