City plants the seeds for a greener future with Urban Greening Strategy

News Update 9 September 2024
The City of South Perth is calling on the community to help shape its new Urban Greening Strategy, which aims to create a greener, cooler, more liveable City.

From tree canopy to understorey planting, urban greening enhances nature and biodiversity while making the City more climate-resilient with adequate habitat, shade and UV protection during hot weather. The Urban Greening Strategy engagement process will rely heavily on community input, gathered through a survey and a series of pop-up events.

The survey will open on Thursday 12 September 2024 on yoursay.southperth.wa.gov.au and remain open until Monday 14 October 2024.

City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner encouraged everyone to have their say on the future of urban greening across the City.

“Urban greening is more than just planting trees and vegetation – it’s about enhancing the environment and making our City a more attractive place to live, work and play," he said.

“This is a great opportunity for residents, workers and visitors to help shape our City’s approach to greening. Whether you’re passionate about street trees, shade in summer or  aesthetically attractive neighbourhoods, your voice matters in developing this strategy.”

Key dates for the community engagement: Stage 1

  • Community survey: Opens on Thursday 12 September and closes at 4pm on Monday 14 October 2024.
  • Drop-in session: Wednesday 18 September at John McGrath Pavilion in South Perth from 4–7pm.
  • Drop-in session: Saturday 5 October near Hurlingham playground on the South Perth Foreshore from 9am–1pm.

The new Urban Greening Strategy will build on the work of the City’s past environmental initiatives, which have already resulted in the planting of over 5,000 trees across streets, parks and reserves. These efforts also led to the creation of Djirda Miya, a dedicated Black Swan habitat, and the installation of bird waterers and fauna boxes to support local wildlife.

After Stage 1 of community engagement is complete, the City will adopt an innovative approach in Stage 2, by bringing together subject matter experts with selected community members as part of a Deliberative Panel. This group will work intensively over two days to provide recommendations for the strategy, balancing community aspirations with real-world challenges.

“This thorough approach will ensure that we develop a strategy that is not only beneficial but also practical and effective,” said Mayor Greg Milner.

“By engaging deeply with the community and experts, we can create a greening plan that delivers tangible benefits and serves the best interests of our community."
