The City of South Perth has welcomed the State Government’s announcement to expand the ferry service operating in the Swan River.

The West Australian reported that Premier Roger Cook said at a Property Council event on 28 February 2024, that a plan would be developed to use the Swan River to its full potential. Premier Cook described the services being discussed as “Metronet on the Swan”.

The current ferry service operates between Elizabeth Quay and South Perth. The City has long advocated for an expanded system to better service its community and tourists visiting South Perth.

The City looks forward to working with the State Government to expand the service to make sure it meets the public transport needs of our community.

The Mends Street Jetty at Mindeerup is the gateway to South Perth, and an improved ferry service will provide a great opportunity to enhance Mindeerup as a destination.

"I’m excited by the announcement of the expanded ferry services along the Swan River,” City of South Perth CEO, Mike Bradford said.

“This initiative demonstrates a commitment to enhancing public transportation options and using our City's natural assets to their full potential.

"Expanding the ferry system aligns with our vision for sustainable urban development and accessible transport networks. This initiative will not only improve the commuter experience but also contribute to the vitality of our City."
