Lighting up the George Burnett Park Precinct

News Update 9 October 2026
George Burnett Precinct Parks and Reserves

Pathways around George Burnett Park in Karawara are now brighter and safer following the completion of a new 750-metre smart lighting project through the precinct.

The new LED lighting runs along the dual-use pathway from Goss Avenue, past Dome Café and through the George Burnett Park Precinct, continuing along the pathway near the southern end of Gillon Street (see map below).

With no lighting previously provided along the path, the new lights improve safety, accessibility and connectivity, making it easier for people to walk, ride and enjoy the area into the evening and early morning.

The project, which was included in the City's Capital Works program, has been designed to improve safety while minimising impacts on Lake Gillon, surrounding bushland and local wildlife. Warm-coloured LED lights and spill guards reduce glare and light spill, while solar-powered and energy-efficient lighting helps reduce energy use.

The smart system also gives the City flexibility to adjust lighting levels and operating times to suit different needs, including events and activities within the precinct. This helps make the system more cost-effective and easier to maintain over time.

The new lighting is another enhancement the City has to the George Burnett Park Precinct, following the opening of the Manning Bike Track in February 2025.  A new playground is also being planned and is open for community feedback until 12 October, with construction expected to be completed by July 2027.
