Discover South Perth’s stories

What was it like growing up in South Perth in the 1920s? How did local families prepare for air raids during the Second World War? And what was it like to ride an elephant around Perth Zoo? 

Discover these stories and many more in the City of South Perth Oral History Collection, now available to explore at South Perth Library. 

The collection features more than 120 interviews, including 30 new items completed earlier this year. Hear first-hand stories from local and former residents, including Mayors, Councillors and war veterans, with interviews dating back to 1988. 

Highlights include: 

• Air raid drills and digging bomb shelters in the 1940s 
• Riding elephants around Perth Zoo and other animal escapades 
• Guy Fawkes night fireworks and childhood adventures 
• The history of iconic local businesses, including Weaver & Lock 
• First-hand accounts from local service men and women
