Health and wellbeing focus for new Public Health Plan

News Update 31 August 2026

The City of South Perth has adopted a new Public Health Plan 2026-2031, reflecting the health priorities of our residents and outlining actions to promote and protect community health and wellbeing over the next five years

The Plan provides a framework for integrating public health outcomes into appropriate existing City programs, services, events, projects and facilities, while also guiding future public health initiatives.  It focuses on four key pillars:

  • Promote: Fostering stronger, connected communities and healthier environments
  • Prevent: Reducing the burden of chronic disease and injury
  • Protect: Protecting against public and environmental health risks and
  • Enable: Bolstering public health systems to support health and wellbeing.

The new Plan was developed following extensive consultation with a number of community advisory groups and informed by community feedback. It will work in conjunction with the State Public Health Plan 2025-2030 and align with Council strategies.

The following public health priority areas have been identified for our community:

  • Community wellbeing
  • Mental health
  • Falls
  • Dementia
  • Capacity building
  • Emergency preparedness

Additional health issues to be addressed through the Plan include optimising healthy nutrition practices; encouraging active lifestyles; improving community resilence for local identified health risks, such as heatwave; optimising access to health services and sport and recreation facilities; and enhancing use of public spaces to support social connection.

Progress against the actions in the Public Health Plan 2026-2031 will be reviewed annually.

Thank you to everyone who provided their valuable input into helping us shape our vision for a healthier community.

Copies of the Plan are available on our website.
