Avian influenza update

News Update 6 July 2026

Residents are advised to report any sick or dead birds, marine animals or other wildlife to the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888  following a suspect positive detection of H5 bird flu on Perth’s northern beaches.

WA’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) has also responded to confirmed detection of H5 bird flu in four vagrant migratory sea birds east of Esperance and Quindalup in the South West.

DPIRD advises avoiding contact with sick or dead animals and taking photos or videos if possible, as well as noting the location to assist with containment.

Avian influenza is an infectious viral disease caused by strains of influenza A virus. It mainly affects birds, but has been known to affect wild and domestic animals.
