H5 avian influenza (bird flu) update

H5 bird flu has been detected in Western Australia, in a small number of wild sea birds.

Residents are advised to report any sick or dead birds, marine animals or other wildlife to the Emergency Animal Disease hotline on 1800 675 888.

DPIRD advises avoiding contact with sick or dead animals and taking photos or videos if possible, as well as noting the location to assist with containment.  

Avian influenza is an infectious viral disease caused by strains of influenza A virus. It mainly affects birds, but has been known to affect wild and domestic animals.
