Canning Bridge maintenance works

News Update 3 June 2026

Residents are advised that Main Roads WA will be undertaking maintenance works on Canning Bridge from mid-2026 to ensure the bridge remains safe, reliable and fit for the future.

As a key transport link regularly used by our community, residents may experience temporary impacts during the works.

The maintenance program includes:

  • Replacement and repair of guardrails and balustrades.
  • Path and asphalt repairs on the bridge deck.
  • Installation of new steel piles beneath the bridge, which will be clad with timber from the existing piles to preserve the bridge's heritage character.

Most works will be carried out beneath the bridge from vessels operating within the river channels. To maintain pedestrian safety, minor detours or stop/slow traffic management may be required on the Principal Shared Path (PSP) adjacent to the river foreshore.

Road users should also expect occasional lane closures and reduced speed limits during certain activities. Works on the bridge deck are expected to be undertaken after hours where possible to minimise traffic congestion.

For further information, project updates or traffic management details, visit the Main Road WA website.
