Vale Bill Grayden
The City of South Perth pays its respects to Bill Grayden AM – Western Australia’s longest serving MP, former local member for South Perth and decorated World War II veteran.
Mr Grayden led a remarkable life dedicated to his country. During World War II, he served in Syria, the Middle East and Papua New Guinea before beginning a distinguished political career spanning both federal and state politics from 1946 to 1993.
Amongst his many achievements, Mr Grayden was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia and honoured as an Honorary Freeman of the City of South Perth. His advocacy work for Aboriginal rights was also an important contribution to the success of the 1967 Referendum on Aboriginal citizenship.
Locally, he served as president of South Perth Senior Citizens Centre for more than 30 years and played a key role in establishing the volunteer-based wheels-on-meals service in South Perth, which continues to operate today.
City of South Perth Mayor Greg Milner said Mr Grayden’s legacy was one of courage, conviction and community service.
“Mr Grayden lived an extraordinary life of selfless public service – from serving his country in wartime to serving the people of Western Australia through decades of public life,” he said.
“He was a universally respected figure in the local community. It is only fitting that his name lives on through Bill Grayden Reserve in Como, a place that reflects both his connection to community and his appreciation for the natural environment,” he added.
“My Grayden’s exceptional contribution to our community, to our State and to our wider nation is an inspiration to us all. On behalf of the City and our community, we thank Mr Grayden for his lifetime of service and extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt respects to his family.”
On the day of Mr Grayden's funeral, the City of South Perth will fly its flags at half mast.
