New guidance for child care developments

News Update 28 August 2025
The City has updated its local planning policy for child care centres to better support families and maintain the amenity of local neighbourhoods.

At its August meeting, Council adopted changes to Local Planning Policy 2.4 – Child Care Premises following community feedback received during the public advertising period.

The amended policy encourages new centres to be located on corner sites to help improve access and reduce traffic on surrounding streets.

It also allows for longer operating hours in mixed-use zones, offering greater flexibility for working families.

In addition, waste management requirements have been updated to reflect the City’s current waste management standards, ensuring child care premises operate responsibly and sustainably.

The policy is now in effect and will guide all future planning proposals for child care centres.
