Young voices took centre stage at the 2025 Speak with Confidence Awards, proudly hosted by the City of South Perth on Wednesday 25 June.

Students from five local primary schools impressed audiences and judges alike with speeches on topics ranging from unlikely superheroes to the power of saying ‘no’.

Now a much-loved annual event, the awards celebrate creativity, confidence and clarity in public speaking. Students choose their own topics, write their speeches and present them to a panel of Toastmasters International judges in front of an audience of teachers, classmates and proud families.

Six finalists were selected from the morning sessions to return for the evening final, where Mayor Greg Milner presented Harry Prout from Como Primary School with the winning trophy. His speech, The Power of ‘No’!, delivered a powerful message about setting boundaries and self-respect.

Second place went to Frankie Meadows from Manning Primary School for Superheroes that Never Made it into Comic Strips, with third place awarded to Julia Idrees from South Perth Primary School for her witty take on parents.

All finalists also received book vouchers to recognise their outstanding efforts.

Mayor Milner said the event continued to be a highlight on the City’s calendar.

“It’s inspiring to see our young people speak with such passion, clarity and confidence,” he said.

“Every student who took part should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.”

The City thanks all participating schools and the dedicated Toastmasters volunteers who make this special event possible each year.
