The City of South Perth is introducing a pre-booked, year-round verge collection service, a Recycling Centre Reuse Shop and a Containers for Change bag drop point to support smarter, more sustainable waste management.

These new services are part of the City of South Perth’s ongoing review of waste management, supporting the State Government’s shift towards a circular economy.

The new Reuse Shop and Container Deposit Scheme bag drop point will be at the City’s Recycling Centre on Thelma Street, Como from August, offering residents an easy way to give items a second life.

For anything that can’t be gifted, re-used or recycled, the new Verge Valet™ collection service – operated by the Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) – will give residents the flexibility to book their collections throughout the year. They will be eligible for one hard waste and two green waste collections during the 2025/26 financial year of up to 3 cubic metres

Mayor Greg Milner said this new multi-pronged approach to waste management aimed to reduce landfill waste while delivering reliable, convenient services.

“We’re offering several new services to encourage our community to use their bins as a last resort,” Mayor Milner said.

“Our pre-booked verge collection will be available year-round and will help keep streets cleaner and safer. Pre-booking is more efficient, convenient, discourages illegal dumping, and helps us maintain a tidier, more attractive City.

“And with Verge Valet™ recovering around 85 per cent of materials collected, it’s a smarter, more sustainable way to manage waste,” he added.

“We’re also looking forward to the opening of the Reuse Shop and Container Deposit Scheme Bag Drop-off point. If our residents have something that’s too good to throw away, they can drop it off at our new Reuse Shop, where it can be accessed by individuals and charities in need of pre-loved, still-useful goods.”

“These changes are partly necessary due to changes in the waste disposal market, but they’re also part of our shift towards encouraging a more circular economy, resulting in less waste and better economic and environmental outcomes for everyone.”

The Verge Valet™ service will be available to City of South Perth residents from 3 July 2025. More information is available on the City's Verge Collection page.

To assist residents with the transition from the current verge service to the pre-booked service, ratepayers will receive extra Recycling Centre Entry Vouchers with their 2025/26 rates notice, allowing them to dispose of two loads of bulk waste and four loads of green waste at the Recycling Centre.

As part of its move towards more sustainable waste solutions, the City of South Perth has been sending residential waste to the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility since September 2024.
