About the Aussie Backyard Bird Count

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is one of the country’s biggest citizen science events, run by BirdLife Australia each October as part of National Bird Week. Since its launch in 2014, the project has inspired thousands of Australians – families, school groups, nature lovers and the bird-curious – to get outside and help track bird populations across the nation.

With more than 85% of Australians living in urban areas, the Bird Count offers a simple, fun and meaningful way to connect with nature.

The next Aussie Backyard Bird Count will take place from 12–26 October 2025
