South Perth’s post-war life in print
Local newspapers donated to the City of South Perth offer a fascinating window into life in the district during the years following World War II.
Residents will get the chance to explore the headlines and stories that shaped the community at a special exhibition event presented by the City’s Local History Librarian in collaboration with the City of South Perth Historical Society.
Unearthed South Perth – Community News 1946-1951 will take place at Heritage House South Perth on 9 May, with two engaging sessions featuring an audio-visual journey through the history, content, and preservation of the area’s most significant local news publication.
These important newspapers highlight a time marked by advocacy for improved health services and public facilities – most notably the South Perth Hospital.
In the lead up to its opening in 1956, the community rallied together through various fundraising initiatives. The Annual Carnival, held each summer, became a central event where residents united for a common cause.
The event is free, but bookings are essential. Please visit the City’s website to reserve your place at one of the two available sessions. Residents are also welcome to visit the exhibition during Heritage House’s regular opening hours.
