New footbridge at Lake Douglas nearing completion
The finishing touches are being made to the new footbridge at Lake Douglas in South Perth.
Construction began in February, reaching an exciting milestone on 11 April when the steel bridge structure was successfully installed on-site.
With handrails and decking now underway, the bridge works are on track for completion as scheduled. Before the bridge opens to the public, some minor works—including the widening of the concrete path—will be required. These additional works are expected to be completed between the second and third week of May 2025.
To preserve both habitat and history, the pylons from the original bridge were retained, while the remaining structure was removed. The upgrade follows a November 2023 assessment that found both footbridges at the lake structurally unsound and at risk of collapse.
In a nod to sustainability, some of the timber from the old bridge was salvaged during its demolition. The City is currently investigating ways to repurpose it for community use.
