Local artists set to inspire at City libraries this winter

Local artists David Ledger and Jessica Holliday were chosen to create two Live Art Studios in the City’s libraries this July and August as part of Evolve: Arts, Events, and Culture Winter Program.

Selected from a competitive pool, David and Jessica will each create a large painting on-site at the South Perth and Manning Libraries. Both seasoned painters, they'll offer onlookers a glimpse into their art practice and composition process.

Jessica will draw on extensive live art experience to reimagine the South Perth Peninsula.

"My artwork will be a re-imagining of the original formation of the South Perth Peninsula, focusing on the specific areas of Gareenup, also known as Mill Point, and Goorgygoogup, or Millers Pool.

"Through my research of historical collections of paintings, maps, and photographs from the first hundred years of settlement, I aim to recreate with as much accuracy as possible what this area of the Peninsula may have looked like before colonisation," Jessica explained.

David's piece will highlight iconic local sites, capturing the spirit and essence of the community.

"I have painted in front of live audiences and conducted workshops where attendees watched my painting demonstrations. This has made me very comfortable with and accustomed to working in a public setting," David said.

Cultural Development Coordinator Adrian Fabiankovits praised the Evolve program as one of the City's most distinctive cultural events.

"Evolve brings the community together like nothing else and it is such an awesome opportunity to see, up close, these two brilliant artists work. Visitors can chat to the artists, find out more about their processes, and come back throughout the week to see the work take form before their very eyes," Adrian said.
