Like many Australians, Melinda Tognini has attended numerous Anzac Day services, but had never considered the war widows’ perspective - until a chance encounter led to a meeting with members of the War Widows’ Guild. With a passion for sharing ‘invisible’ stories – those stories absent from or sidelined in the dominant narratives of our history – Melinda Tognini spent the next eight years researching, writing and editing Many Hearts, One Voice: the story of the War Widows’ Guild in Western Australia.
Melinda’s book tells the story of a group of women whose hopes and dreams for their post-war future were dashed, but who banded together and transformed grief into action. Join us as Melinda introduces us to some of the courageous and tenacious women she came to know through archives, newspapers and oral history interviews, and explains why Many Hearts, One Voice is part of a continuing story.
Books will be on sale on the night and Melinda will be available for book signing.
This event is part of the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival which is supported through funding from the Australian Government’s National Trusts Partnership Program.
