Local Heritage
The City's Local Heritage Inventory contains information on a variety of places which are of local heritage significance to the City of South Perth. The list includes a range of public and private buildings and places including parks, houses, shops, churches, schools and monuments. Those places included on the Local Heritage Inventory demonstrate the history of development of the City of South Perth and the stories of its community. The City’s vision is for these buildings and places to be protected, enhanced and celebrated.
In arriving at a decision as to whether or not a place should be included on the Local Heritage Inventory, consideration is given to a range of criteria:
- Aesthetic value
- Historic value
- Scientific value
- Social value
- Rarity
- Representativeness
- Condition
- Integrity
- Authenticity.
If the building or place is considered to be of heritage significance it will be assigned a Management Category of either A, B, C, or D with A being of exceptional significant and D being of little significance based on the assessment against the above criteria.
Places with a Management Category of A or B make up the City’s Heritage List. This provides those places with statutory protection requiring that prior approval is obtained for any proposed modifications, additions or demolition.
The Local Heritage Inventory is created and maintained as a requirement of the Heritage Act 2018. The Inventory forms the basis of the City's Heritage List which is required under Schedule 2 ‘Deemed Provisions’ of the Planning and Development (Local Planning Schemes) Regulations 2015. The City’s Planning Policy P313 Local Heritage Listing provides further direction in relation to the Local Heritage Inventory, Heritage List, and development on heritage-listed sites.
