Heritage List adopted to protect City’s historical sites
Sites of historical significance within the City have now been recognised following the adoption of the City’s new Heritage List.
Council endorsed the Heritage List at its October 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting, ensuring that iconic landmarks such as the Narrows Bridge, Como Theatre and Windsor Hotel are formally recognised and protected.
Including a place on the heritage list gives the place recognition and protection under Local Planning Scheme No.7. It also means that owners must submit development applications for proposals that would otherwise be exempt from the requirement for development approval.
Whilst assessment is required, importantly, including a place on a heritage list does not limit or restrict how a local government is to determine an application, or necessarily prohibit building works or other development from occurring.
The Heritage List was informed by the recently adopted Local Heritage Survey, and the City thanks the community for valuable insights into places throughout the district in preparing these documents.
