Minister Officially Opens Animal Care Facility

Media Release 17 December 2014

JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
Minister for Local Government and Communities Hon Tony Simpson MLA will officially open the South Perth and Victoria Park Animal Care Facility this afternoon.

In October 2012, the City of South Perth approached all local governments in the zone suggested by the Department of Local Government’s application guidelines for Animal Care Facility Funding.

Following extensive consultation, the City and Town of Victoria Park put forward an application and in February 2013 a funding allocation for $256,000 was received from the State Government to upgrade the dog pound to an Animal Care Facility.

In addition to the funding received, the City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park also allocated money for the upgrade.

The City’s dog pound was closed in March this year to begin renovations. As a result, the new facility is now capable of housing over 60 animals, which includes cats following the recent introduction of the Cat Act.

The building design follows the guidelines for an Animal Care Facility as required by the RSPCA, including isolation areas for infection, quarantine areas, assessing areas and new standards for housing of animals.

Other new key features include an office and waiting room, a new toilet and shower facilities and a secured unloading zone.
