Funding shored up for river walls
City of South Perth Chief Executive Officer Cliff Frewing and Mill Point Ward Councillor Michael Huston joined Minister for Environment Hon. Albert Jacob and Member for South Perth John McGrath for the announcement on the South Perth Foreshore.
Chief Executive Officer Cliff Frewing said the funding announcement would enable the City to upgrade and replace the aging river wall which is in extremely poor condition either side of the Mends Street jetty.
“The South Perth Foreshore at Mends Street is the most prominent location of the City which attracts thousands of visitors and tourists alike each week. The funding from the State Government, along with matching funds from the City will enable the replacement of the river walls in this location.
“The riverwall in this location has been fenced for the past two years as a precautionary measure.
“The City has lobbied long and hard for the State Government to recognise the need for funding of the repair of the river walls and welcomes the funding announcement.
“The City plans to commence work on the replacement of the walls in August or September of this year, with works expected to be completed by the end of the year,” Mr Frewing said.
The walls either side of the prominent Mends St jetty location will be replaced with new limestone walls with contemporary flat capping for comfortable sitting. The wall will incorporate a wave deflection curve over the riverside of the wall and is a proven design for river wave management.
The latest funding announcement follows on from last year’s budget allocation of $500,000, with the Minister for Environment indicating that another $350,000 would be allocated next year to complete the $1.35 million election commitment.
Following the replacement of the river wall, the City plans to extend the pathway alongside the river a minimum width of five metres to comfortably accommodate people promenading and exercising along the river foreshore.
