New Council Sworn In

Media Release 23 October 2013
The City of South Perth’s newly elected Council was sworn in at a Special Council Meeting held on Tuesday 23 October 2013.

Eight councillors, representing the City’s four wards were sworn in by former Mayor and Freeman of the City John Harwick at the special presentation.

Following a review of elected member representation and ward boundaries, the City reduced the number of wards within the City from six to four, and the number of elected members from 12 to eight and this was implemented at the recent election. The new City wards are Mill Point, Como, Moresby and Manning.

Two newly elected councillors took their place on Council, Cheryle Irons and Michael Huston representing Mill Point Ward.

Returning Councillors Kevin Trent, Fiona Reid were elected for Moresby Ward with Veronica Lawrence and Glenn Cridland filling the positions for Como Ward.

Councillors Sharron Hawkins-Zeeb and Colin Cala were elected unopposed to the seat of Manning.

Councillor Glenn Cridland was elected by the Council to the position of Deputy Mayor.

In welcoming the newly elected Councillors, City of South Perth Mayor Doherty said:

“It is a privilege to be chosen as representatives of the people for the City of South Perth, and this Council can reassure residents that elected members will work hard to maintain an open, honest, responsive and trusting partnership with our community.

“Local government is the sector of government that has the most direct influence on the everyday aspects of people’s lives.

“The length of term for the current Council is 20 months, as we work towards local government amalgamations which will bring challenges to the new Council and hard work ahead of us.”

“This Council will be integral in the role for leading the way for local government reform," Mayor Doherty said.

Mayor Doherty acknowledged the contributions of outgoing councillors, and extended thanks to those who nominated in the local government elections and were not successful.
